Gas Grilling Safety and Care

April 18th, 2008 staff Posted in Home Furnishing No Comments »

The gas grill as fun as it gets is still a major appliance that needs maintenance and care while using. Most gas grills are fueled by liquified petroleum gas or propane. Unburned gas accidentally released or leaking from a gas grill can cause a dangerous fire or explosion. Problems that lead to fires or explosions commonly occur at two times: during the first use of a grill after a long period of storage and when a new cylinder of propane gas is attached to the grill.

Here are some of the safety measures that you observe use while using your grill:

1. Inspect grills closely prior to the first summertime use. Check the metal tubes that lead directly to the burner. During storage, insects can block these tubes. They can be cleaned following the manufacturer’s instructions, typically by using a pipe cleaner or wire to remove any blockage. Check hoses for cracks or holes and replace any hose that appears to be damaged. Remove any sharp bends that you may find in the hose.

Glass Doors for Fireplaces

April 17th, 2008 staff Posted in Home Furnishing No Comments »

The type of fireplace you have will determine the right glass door for it.  Glass fireplace doors serve a very specific purpose. A good fitting glass door helps to seal the fireplace opening, thus providing a valuable benefit in reducing smoke emission. In addition, having a downdraught is a problem that can be found in many fireplaces and is due to the chimney terminal having an incorrect height in correlation to the roof or even trees and buildings located nearby. In this case, the glass fireplace door can help to stop any incoming cold air, thus keeping the house warm and making the fireplace more efficient.

In the past few years, special thermal insulated glass doors have been designed providing even greater benefit. In addition to keeping hot ash from spilling out onto your carpet and creating a potential fire hazard, this type of glass door is perfect for retaining heat, even after the fire is out.

Protective Finishes for Wood Patios and Decks

April 15th, 2008 staff Posted in Home Furnishing No Comments »

No matter what kind of wood you’ve chosen for your deck or patio, all decking can use some type of protective finish. Most finishes may be chosen according to the look you want your wood to achieve. This article discusses various methods to finish your decking to enhance it decoratively, and also to protect it for seasons to come.

Whatever finish you apply, be sure that your wood has been treated with a preservative and water repellant so it will last from season to season. Even redwood and cedar should ideally be given a water repellant for the extra protection if promises. A popular preservative for decking is pentachlorophenol, which is both odorless and clear. It must be applied generously to all exposed decking and its substructure. It will soak into the wood quickly and it should be used as a primer no matter what finish you wish to apply.

Care of Leather Furnishings

April 12th, 2008 staff Posted in Home Furnishing No Comments »

No other type of furniture in the world exudes class, style and comfort quite like leather. Everything from sofas and chairs to ottomans and dinette chair covers, there is something that will satisfy even the biggest fan of leather furniture.

With proper care, you can experience the maximum enjoyment of your leather furniture. The following are some tips and guides on how to take care of your leather furniture:

  • Rotate cushions every 30-60 days for even wear, depending on the amount of use. Remember to exercise polyfill bag by fluffing and redistributing the holofill evenly throughout.
  • All leather will fade. To protect your leather, do not place it in any form of sunlight. Do not place your leather furniture near windows, under skylights or beneath similar forms of light. Keep medium to large windows closed when not at home because even a few minutes a day will affect your leather. Open grain and aniline leathers are extremely sensitive to direct or indirect light.
  • Depending on your needs, add polyfill as needed.
  • All leathers perform better when preventative maintenance is practiced. Using a white luke-warm damp rag dust off arms, seats and back pillows once a week.
  • Take care not to place your furniture too near a radiator or similar heat source. Make sure there is at least 3 feet of space between your furniture and heat source.
  • Use only proven and tested leather cleaning products. When in doubt ask a professional and test the product on an inconspicuous area.
  • When it comes to removing stains or spills, be sure to act quickly. Allowing a stain to set for a few hours or even days is the worst thing you can do since stains are much more difficult to remove once they are trapped within the fibers of the upholstery material.
  • Whether your furniture needs a proper cleaning or you have experienced a particularly difficult stain, consider bringing in professional help for your upholstered furniture. When choosing a professional cleaner, be sure that the company does not use tetrachloride-based products, as they could damage the integrity of the fabric. Search for a cleaner that does not use wet methods of cleaning upholstery, since wet cleaning can damage the upholstery fabric or the filler inside your cushions.
