Designing Your Closet

1. Create a balanced and appealing design. You can look up some designs on the magazines and even on the internet. Make sure that the design that you choose will blend in with the entire look and theme of your room.

2. Determine how much of clothing storage type (hanging, folded, drawers) you need. Just make a general estimate for each storage type.

3. Place drawers at the center of the closet, directly across from the door so that they can have an extra clearance for opening that will be provided by the open closet door. If you’re designing a large closet, include an island in the center of the space that incorporates your drawers.

4. Closet corners should be allocated as hanging spaces.

5. Ample spaces between vertical shelves should be made with 8 inches being nthe minimum and 18 inches the maximum. Too little height creates deep dark spaces and too much height wastes space and stacked clothes fall over.

6. Using pre-assembled cabinets is and advantage because the measurements are standard and will minimize the guessing for the exact measurement.

7. Allocate shoe storage in your closet design. You can have it under the hanging clothes section. Shoe shelves should be a minimum of 2 feet wide to accommodate two pairs sitting tandem.

8. Make a space for your dirty laundry hamper. Retractable hampers that slide on runners is an ideal system for most closets.
