Furnishing and Decorating Your Child’s Room

Of all the rooms in your house, your child’s room is the most complicated yet exciting areas to create. Designing and furnishing it will require careful planning and consideration. Often, there aren’t enough rooms in the house for a separate bedroom and playroom so most of the time the child’s bedroom is also his playroom. Here are some guidelines to get you started:

1. Take note of the basics
There are a lot of factors to consider before getting ready to work on your child’s room.

  • Age and Gender - Age-specific needs dictate how kid’s rooms should be designed and furnished because children’s needs differ from each stage. Children’s needa and demands often change quickly so the room should adapt to the child’s development with minimal change.
  • Designation of Areas - Just like us grownups, kids need areas for sleeping, playing and later on studying and daydreaming. Defining these areas will held chilren understand that there is a time and place for everything like a corner to store the toys, an area to store things away. This is very important if your children are sharing rooms.
  • Child Anthropometrics - Anthropometrics is the study of positioning loose and built-in furniture in relation to the body’s measurements - in this case, your child’s body. A child must be able to comfortably reach his things like toys, books and even light switches.
  • Safety - A most prevailing concern for parents is the child’s safety. A few of these are getting tables and beds with rounded edges, padded headboards and footboards, using rubberized flooring, covering electrical outlets and keeping it free from breakable items.
  • Inspiring decor - A favorite color,theme or motif can greatly inspire your child. Use colors or patterns to spruce it up like stripes, checks, swirls or waves but don’t over do it. Look to your child for inspiration - a pet- loving child will love a farmhouse or Noah’s Ark theme.
  • Comfort and Practicality - You want to consider storage, safety, accessibility and durability of the furnishings. Multi-purpose furnitures is a great advantage like beds with storage underneath. Avoid using glass on cabinets and you may want to apply chalkboard paint on one wall so that your child can draw and doodle at will.

2. Make it Flexible
Your child’s room should be able to adapt to your child’s development with out you redecorating it entirely and frequently.

  • Choose a Focal Point - To make your child’s room to last long, use a solid color for most of the room and isolate the accents like wallpaper, murals and stencilsmon one wall or two walls.
  • Limit your Theme to Accessories - Soft furnishings like curtains and bedsheets are the easiest to change according to your child’s age. Little beddings can be easily be changed to mature designs when your child grows up.

3. Use the Latest Kiddie Trends
Your child will need a room that he can be proud of and will want to show it to his friends.

  • Bold Color and Pattern - Former fave kid’s colors like baby pink and sky blue have given way to hues that will give a vibrant lift to the room like fuchsia, lime green or bright orange. Furniture can also be painted in bold colors and patterns because when paired with bright walls, it will give the room an energetic and vibrant feel.
  • Murals - Murals add spice to a room because they are unique and especially suited to the room’s proportions. More parent’s nowadays are willing to spend on this feature because of its beauty and artistry of images that will develop a child’s imagination.
