Furniture Buying 101
Buying furnitures is a big investment and should not be taken lightly. It needs planning, research and most of all, prize canvassing. Otherwise, you’ll have a furniture that you’re not happy about, is over prized or does not blend with the theme and look of your house. So here are some guidelines when buying furnitures:
1. Know what you want
Before rushing to the nearest furniture store or shopping online, think of the style that you want and plans for the space being furnished. If you have pictures of furniture you like, bring that with you, along with paint samples from the wall and carpet swatches to help you during your shopping excursion. Having everything in front of you will enable you to compare the colors and reach a solid decision.
2. Measure the space
It is best to measure the space where you want the new furniture to be placed because your room and the showroom has an entirely a different size and shape. Carrying a tape measure with you when you go furniture shooping is a good idea.
3. Request a fabric swatch
Always ask for a fabric swatch when you’re buying an upholstered furniture. The way fabrics look in a showroom or on the internet may be deceiving because of the difference in lighting. Compare and see how the swatch will look like in relation to the color sheme of the room and the accessories like carpets, rugs and drapes.
4. Know if the furniture is comfortable or functional
When shooping online, check out furniture stores that carry similar merchandise. Because you can only see the product’s picture in the web site, you can not test it out so it is best to do it this way. Know also the store’s return policy in case you need it. Test the furniture be sitting on it or laying on it. Do not be dissuaded the the sales talk because you know what is comfortable for you.
5. Do not be a sucker for a sale
Although it can be difficult to pass up a piece of furniture that is 50% off, think about it first because you might end up with a piece that you do not like after all or it does not fit your room’s theme.
6. Do not listen to other’s opinions
Do not listen to what other people say because unfortunately, we have different opinions. However, you may consult one or two people that knows the stuff and have good taste.
7. Buying from the store versus online shopping
Online shopping have its advantages over store shopping:
- Choices - online shopping offers unlimited choices where as furniture stores only have what is displayed in their show room and their catalog.
- Prize - it is cheaper to buy online because online stores don’t need to pay sales staff
- Convenience - you do not have to leave your house when shopping online and there are no annoying sales people to harass you
8. Thinking you need individualized attention
If you think that you’re going to need unlimited assistance from a salesperson, think again. Sales people usually juggles as many customers that they can handle and they will stick to the customer that is likely to buy. You can always find answers online. Try browsing the FAQ section of the website and you can find answers to almost all of your questions.
9. Do not forget to measure the area where you want the furniture to pass during delivery
This huge mistake has happened to a lot of people that resulted in scraped and scratched door, door frames, walls and dividers. Measure ahead of time and look for other entry options.
10. Always do prize canvassing
Some stores offer higher prizes than others so it always pay to do prize canvassing first before deciding where to buy. Don’t forget to ask for discount especially on bulk purchases and you may ask them to throw in a free delivery. Some stores offer zero percent interest on credit plan with deferred payments for one year.
