Gas Grilling Safety and Care
The gas grill as fun as it gets is still a major appliance that needs maintenance and care while using. Most gas grills are fueled by liquified petroleum gas or propane. Unburned gas accidentally released or leaking from a gas grill can cause a dangerous fire or explosion. Problems that lead to fires or explosions commonly occur at two times: during the first use of a grill after a long period of storage and when a new cylinder of propane gas is attached to the grill.
Here are some of the safety measures that you observe use while using your grill:
1. Inspect grills closely prior to the first summertime use. Check the metal tubes that lead directly to the burner. During storage, insects can block these tubes. They can be cleaned following the manufacturer’s instructions, typically by using a pipe cleaner or wire to remove any blockage. Check hoses for cracks or holes and replace any hose that appears to be damaged. Remove any sharp bends that you may find in the hose.
2. Follow your grill manufacturer’s instructions for checking the connection to the cylinder every time a new cylinder is connected to the grill. An easy way to do this is to tighten the connection and then applying a soapy water solution around the connection. If bubbles appear, the connection is leaking. Turn the cylinder off, reconnect the cylinder and check again.
3. Do not attempt to repair the tank valve or the grill yourself. See a gas dealer or a qualified appliance repair technician.
4. Never attempt to connect a cylinder to a grill unless they have matching connections.
5. If you smell gas, turn the grill off immediately and do not use it until the problem can be corrected.
6. Keep your grill on a flat level surface, 10 feet from any building. A grill should not be used inside or under a carport or breezeway. Never use a grill inside. Finding a safe place to put a grill in your yard can be harder than you might expect. It should be placed away from all flammable material, such as grass, trees and the house and it should sit on a nonflammable surface, such as brick or concrete.
7. Do not move a grill that is in use.
8. Always open the lid of a grill before igniting it with an electric igniter.
9. Use long-handled utensils to avoid being burned. Use tongs instead or spatula or fork. A spatula can scrape any burnt material from the grate into the meat. Never use a fork because once you pierce the meat, the juices will flow out and cause the meat to become dry.
10. For protection, some people wear oven mitts that cover the whole forearm.
11. Always warn people that are nearby before starting a fire.
12. When using lighter fluid, add it only before lighting the coals, never while they’re burning. Let the fumes from the fluid burn off before adding food to the grill.
13. To prevent food poisoning, keep raw meat in a cooler or ice chest until right before putting on the grill.
14. Thoroughly wash your hands and any utensil used on raw meat to prevent food poisoning. One solution is to keep a bottle of hand sanitizer next to the grill.
15. To prepare the fire, fill an empty milk or juice carton with charcoal and place it in the bottom of the grill. Light the top of the carton. The wax lining of the carton slows its burn speed, allowing the coals to heat to the desired temperature. As the carton disintegrates, the coals spread across the bottom of the grill.
These are just a few tips that a good griller should follow. We don’t always think about these things, especially when we are in the middle of trying to have a good time. The grill has the potential to be a safety hazard, and with a few steps taken by you, you will have hours of grilling pleasure.
