When it comes to lighting fixtures today, the choices are almost endless. From chandeliers, pendants, sconces, strip lighting, recessed can lighting, track lighting, floor lamps, ceiling fixtures, the list simply goes on and on. Not only that, for each type of lighting, there is the style, size and most of all, the prize to consider.

The new and soon to be homeowner is very excited to choose and pick the best that will suit their needs but alas, they don’t know a single thing about lighting fixtures. So here are some of the basics to go by. First, lighting is classified into three categories like accent lighting, task lighting and ambiance lighting. In accent lighting comes the table lamps, rail lighting, sconces, torchieres and pendant lighting to name a few. Task lighting includes track lights, spot lights, reading lights, recessed lighting and table lamps. For ambiance lighting, you can have chandeliers, recessed lights, ceiling lights and pendant lights. Functional needs determines the lighting fixtures to be purchased because lighting fixtures don’t fall into rigid functional categories.

One important thing to consider when it comes to lighting fixture is the energy usage. Most lighting fixtures now comes with energy efficient bulbs.

Another thing to consider is the theme of the room where the lights will be installed. Decorative lighting should never be employed as a main light source as they are glaring and too bright while t ask lights should serve as the primary lighting source providing at least five times the level as ambient lighting. Dimmer switches are easy to install and allow the homeowner to do all kinds of creative balancing of lighting levels. Decorative lighting should always fit in to the overall lighting layout and should never become the main focus of attention when someone enters the room.
