House Remodeling to Accomodate the Elderly

Some families are now opting to bring the elderly in their homes rather than consigning them in the home for the aged. But before you can do this, your house must be remodeled to fit the accommodation needs of the elderly. The changes will include:

  • Remodel your house so that you can live on the ground floor if necessary.
  • Doorways should be widen to allow passage of wheelchairs.
  • Entry should be as level to the ground as possible. You can refer to the local building code for this.
  • Bathroom remodeling should include installation of grab bars.
  • Storage should be within 20 to 40 inches above the floor with a maximum depth of 20 inches.
  • Drawers are more preferable than cupboards.
  • Replace all door handles with levels.
  • Hard flooring and low pile carpets are more preferable.
  • Electrical outlets should be higher than usual and switches lower.
  • Install a shelf outside the front door so you can put down packages while searching for keys.
  • Vinyl sidings are recommended for its low maintenance and no painting needed.
