How to Shop for Decorative Wallpaper

Selecting and buying wallpaper can be a tremendous and stressful task but wallpaper companies are making it easier to shop for and find the perfect wallpaper to complete the look that you want for the rooms of your house. Sample books are now provided to make the daunting task a lot easier.

Step 1. Evaluate your room

Take a good look around your room and decide the look and effect that you want in this particular room. Once you have decided on the look, evaluate the furnishings currently in the room. Decide what you want to keep and what has to go. Next, look for the “unifying” factor like the color or style. The wallpaper is the finishing addition in order to pull everything together.

Step 2. Make a plan

To shop right, walk in with a plan - a pillow, a sample of something they want to keep and blend to, but not necessarily match. Most consumers are looking to enhance what they already have. Take samples with you, gathered in an organized binder that guides you room by room. With the plan in hand, you are ready to hit the stores. Add to your plan the detailed floor plan of your rooms including the windows, doors, fireplaces and other permanent fixtures. Measure carefully and do not just estimate. This will help you in buying the correct amount of wallpaper needed. To be precise, bring a list with the following information:

  • What room am I decorating?
  • What is the exact size of each wall? Note the height and width.
  • How many doors and windows are in the room?
  • Is there a fireplace, staircase or any permanent fixture of the room?
  • Style of furnitures that are in the room. Bring pictures if possible.
  • The overall effect I want from my new wallpaper.
  • Traffic in this room (light, medium, heavy)

Step 3. Ready to shop

When you reach the store, consult with the retailer staff about your plan. Referring to your plan helps keep you focused and prevents you from making impulse purchase that you might regret later. Consulting with helpful, experienced staff in the wallpaper department can save you time. Sample books are very helpful in deciding what you buy. Spread out samples from your binder right next to the wallpapers you like best. Take a friend who knows you and your tastes and get their input. If you are torn between a couple of collections, don’t panic. Most retailers can get you a sample swatch or will allow you to check out the book for an evening.

Step 4. Getting it home and on the wall

When you have decided on the right selection, do not buy just yet; take the sample book home so that you will see the effects of the wallpapers that you have chosen. Put it right up against the wall and leave it there. Watch what it does for the room as you enter. Look at it different times of day in different lighting conditions. Do you still love it? Now you know you have made a successful choice and are ready to decorate.

If you are decorating the house for a special occasion like the holidays, remember that many other shoppers have the same plan in mind. Start early and allow plenty of time for shopping for your wallpaper. Be sure to let the retailer know your decorating deadline!

While each roll of wallpaper comes with hanging instructions enclosed, there is nothing like watching an installation first hand. Ask your local retailer if they are hosting any wallpaper hanging clinics or if they rent out video tapes on the subject. Ask for their advice on the type of product you are buying.

Set aside a day or an entire weekend for the installation so you will nott be rushed, or contact a professional paperhanger to do the job for you if your schedule is tight or you are in doubt that you can do it right.
