How to Take Care of Your Cutlery
If you say cutlery, it refers to any hand utensil used in preparing, serving and eating food. It has a variety of names like silverware, flatware and tableware. Cutlery includes spoon, fork and knife and can be made from silver, silverplated, stainless steel, gold, goldplated, pewter, Electroplated Nickel Silver and plastic.
1. Although almost all products now are guaranteed dishwasher safe, it is recommended to hand wash them before the first use. Use the soft side of the sponge because abrasive claddings can scratch the cutlery.
2. After dishwashing, rinse each item with water and wipe dry especially the knives and silverplated ones. To avoid contact corrosion, store stainless steel and silverplated pieces separately.
3. Do not leave your cutlery in the dishwasher after the cycle is finished because condensation is one cause of corrosion.
4. For silverplated cutlery:
- Do not mix your silverplated cutlery with the stainless steel ones in a single basket
- Wipe dry after washing
- Frequent use is recommended to prevent oxidation from forming
- Use antioxidizer when storing, as needed
5. For goldplated cutlery:
- Hand washing is recommended due to the delicacy of the gold coating
- Never use chemical polish because it might damage the gold plating
