Antique plates can add a fancy taste and interest to your décor. There are many ways on how to use antique plates as decorations. Some can be hanged right on the walls for a unique look. You can use special holders to hang them or use ribbons and hang from fancy hooks. The key to making them a successful wall decor is the right arrangement.

Large platters or chargers can be the focal point so you have to make sure to hang them in a spot that is just right for its size and focus. They can be hanged above the server or dry sink, over a couch, behind the dining table, over the fireplace or on a feature wall. A feature wall is where the placement of furniture or the layout of the home naturally guides the eye to a wall.

Group smaller plates together so that they can create interest. use a common theme like color, pattern or style to hold the grouping together. Hang a single smaller piece low on the wall and as close to the furniture as possible, otherwise it will seem to be floating.

When grouping pieces together, space them properly. Place each item approximately 3 inches away from either side. You can lay them on the floor to try out different positions. Once you are satisfied with the arrangement, you can  lay newspapers that are joined together and mark there places. You can then use it to mark their positions on the wall. This way, you won’t make unnecessary or off the mark holes.

Plates should be hung with the center of the plate at eye level. That means the center should be about 60 to 66 inches from the floor. If you’ve visited a gallery you will see that the frames are not lined up by their top or bottom edges but that the pictures are all centered at the same height. If the plates will be viewed from a sitting position like from the dining table, you should hang at the eye level of the sitter. If you are hanging it behind the dry sink or server, make sure it is no more than 10 inches above the back.
