Living Room Lighting

Aside from the bedroom, we spend most of our time in the living room. A living room is a versatile room because it can be used for many purposes like watching tv, lounging around, relaxing, reading, entertaining friends and guests and a whole lot of other things. Because of this, a living room should be lighted properly in order to meet the different demands of the room’s users.

A good living room lighting should be flexible in quantity and quality. Using different forms of lighting ( general lighting, accent lighting and task lighting) will cover all of the lighting needs. Examples of these lighting are recessed lighting, decorative table lamps, reading lamps, wall lamps/scones,picture lights and of course, chandeliers and pendant lights.

Sad to say, there are many living rooms that are poorly lighted and the lighting fixtures that are installed can not compensate with the lighting needs of the room, specially a large one. As a standard, a couple of table lamps, four to six recessed downlighters, a picture light to highlight an ornamental object or painting, a concealed lighting inside a bookshelf and a floor lamp will cover all the basic lighting needs. Having all of these lights in the living room does not mean that all of these lights will be turned on at the same time. For effect, have a few lights on depending on what sort of mood you wanted to create and what activities were taking place.

It is best to take note that the different types of light fixtures are quite versatile and can adapt to suit different lighting requirements. An example of this is using adjustable lights that can highlight different objects by simply repositioning the light source from the lamp. Living room lighting is not all about simply lighting the room but of creating the mood and ambiance that will make you, your family and your guests linger and enjoy the living room.
