Maintenance of Hardwood Floors
Present day advances in wood flooring finishes gives homeowners an easy time in maintaining their hard wood floors. Regular and daily maintenance basic is sweeping with a soft brittle broom and vacuuming with a soft floor attachment especially on beveled edges that is prone to collect dust and debris. Periodical application of wood floor cleaning product that is also recommended.
Some of the do’s about hardwood floor maintenance are:
- Bristle mats should be place at the entrance to get rid of major dirt and peebles that can cause scratches on the floor.
- Furnitures should be padded to minimize scratches.
- Spills should be wiped dry immediately to prevent seepage into the floor causing it to rot.
- Pet’s nails should be trimmed, again to avoid scratches on the floor.
- Use a humidifier throughout the winter months to keep wood movement and shrinkage to a minimum.
- Place an area rug in the kitchen especially in front of the sink.
Don’ts
- Avoid using wet mops on your hardwood floor because seepage of excess water can cause the wood to rot.
- Do not drag your furnitures when moving it, even if its legs are padded. This is to avoid scratches.
- Do not use sheet vinyl or tile floor care products on wood floors. Self-polishing acrylic waxes cause wood to become slippery and appear dull quickly.
- Do not over-wax a wood floor, try buffing it instead to bring back its luster. Low traffic and under furniture areas should be checked for wax buildup.
- Don’t apply urethane finish. Urethane and wax are two completely different types of finish. Waxing a urethane finish can ruin your existing finish.
- Don’t use wet swiffer type products or oil based soap. Anything wet can cause damage to hardwood floors and the use of oil soap can create a residue build up, which dulls the look of the floor.
