On Choosing Window Coverings

Window coverings are one of the most important focal points in a well-decorated room, but choosing the right ones, at the right price, is a prime consideration. There is a wide variety of colors, textures and designs, available to complement your personality and reflect your home lifestyle. There are many facets to consider for decorating your windows like; it needs to be aesthetic as well as functional, provides privacy as well as lets in light. Attention to detail should be the rule as you will be shelling a part of your bank account and having to redo everything when you don’t like the overall look is a waste of money, time and effort. So, it will be for the best to do it right the first time around.

First thing to consider is the house’s architecture. For a historic designed house a more traditional or Victorian window treatment may look better than vertical blinds. If you have a cabin or oriental style house, wood woven shades or bamboo blinds might do the trick for you.

Second is the type of atmosphere you want to create in a room and the room’s purpose as well. For example, a bright and cheerful pattern will be best for rooms where there is a lot of activity, whereas a plainer look is best for places of relaxation.

Third is the amount of light you want to let in. Some windows like the bedroom windows require a lot of privacy while other windows like the living room window needs only a simple border or valance. If you have windows where no neighbors can see into your home, you may be happy to leave those free of window coverings or alternatively choose something sheer so you can easily see outside.

When selecting window coverings, consider the amount of sun exposure the fabrics will receive, and decorate accordingly, if you want to get the longest life out of your window dressings. All fabrics are vulnerable to sunlight degradation, but silk is the weakest, while acrylic, modacrylic, polyester, and glass fibers are the most resistant to sun damage.

There’s no doubt that window coverings are vital to the overall look and feel of a room, but you don’t have to break your budget to create dramatic window presentations because the possibilities are endless. All it takes is a little imagination.
