Sofa and Sofa Sleepers Buying Guide

April 23rd, 2008 staff Posted in Living Room | No Comments »

Everyone needs a sofa and with such a wide variety to choose from, you can end up with a headache just looking at endless choices.

Style and fabric are important factors but over all, you want comfort. Consider the room that you want to place the furniture and your choices will be narrowed down. If the sofa will be for the family room, consider a hardy fabric to withstand the constant use. Make sure to match your sofa with the existing decors and colors.

Another thing to take into consideration is the frame type. Cheaper sets will have a soft wood frame like pine. The deck or seat platform can be either a “no sag” or sinuous wire zigzag type or the nicer more expensive “eight way hand tied” platform which provides the ultimate in comfort and quality. Remember, you get what you pay.

Creative and Inexpensive Headboard Ideas

April 22nd, 2008 staff Posted in Bedroom | No Comments »

Headboards are nice and can add elegance to your bedroom. You don’t have to bust your bank account just to buy a nice headboard. You can create your own unique headboard that is not only stylish and creative but inexpensive too. The following are some ideas on how to create your own stylish headboard:

1. Make use of that old door that is lying in your garage. Sand and stain the door to have a classic look and to match it with existing furniture. You can also paint the door and create a distressed look. If the door is paneled, the inserts can be painted a contrasting color, stenciled with elegant designs, or decoupage with fabric or handmade papers.

2. Use a section of wooden picket or wrought iron fencing. Paint the sections and secure with bolts or hooks.

3. Use a plant trellis. Paint it and decorate with ivy, silk flowers, ribbons or anything that you want to hang like pictures of the family.

Storage Space for Kids’ Stuff

April 21st, 2008 staff Posted in Bedroom | No Comments »

A child is a joy to have but along with the bundle of joy is a lot of baggage and you have to find places to store all his stuff. As you’re preparing a room for a newborn or redecorating for a growing child, finding storage space is just as important as choosing the right color paint or bedding. As your child grows, he will accumulate a lot of things and these things will need an awful lot of storage space.

Out in the open
Lots of things that your child uses can be stored on shelves, book shelves, hang on hooks or on containers on a desk or table. To keep things looking neat and orderly, keep books neatly arranged, games in boxes, or toys hanging on pegs on the wall. You can also place smaller items into coordinated baskets or plastic boxes for a neat look on open shelves.

Out of sight but close at hand
For things that just cannot be made to look neat, use shelves or a chest of drawers in a closet, arrange boxes in an armoire, or slide things in shallow boxes under the bed. Stacks of clothes, hobby supplies, school bags can easily be hidden behind doors, but remain convenient and ready at any time. For the ultimate organization, use boxes, files, or storage baskets to keep things organized.

Wall Covering Adhesives

April 20th, 2008 staff Posted in Wall | No Comments »

There are many types of wall covering adhesives, each formulated for various performance characteristics. These characteristics fall in two general categories; how they bond the wall covering to the wall surface and how they apply to the wallcovering which is a major consideration for wall covering installer. Wall covering adhesives are formulated for specific applications. Some adhesives are formulated for lightweight and delicate fabrics while others are designed to adhere heavyweight vinyl and acoustical coverings.

Adhesives vary in level of wet-tack, solids, open-time, strip ability and ease of application. All wall covering adhesives contain a biocide system. These systems are designed to prevent bacterial contamination and mildew/fungal infestation both “in-the-can” and in the dried adhesive. Choosing the Right Toilet for Your Bathroom

April 20th, 2008 staff Posted in Bathroom | No Comments »

Looks is only one of the things to take into consideration when choosing the right toilet for your bathroom. When it comes to choosing a commode, size, height and how well it functions are some of the other things to think about.

Commodes come in a variety of shapes and sizes but a rough-in distance, which measures the distance from the finished wall to the center of the sewer drain for the toilet, will narrow the field. The standard rough-in is 12 inches, and the widest selection of toilets is available in this size. If a bathroom remodel makes use of an existing rough-in that is another size, 10 or 14 inches for example, choices can be more limited.

Gas Grilling Safety and Care

April 18th, 2008 staff Posted in Home Furnishing | No Comments »

The gas grill as fun as it gets is still a major appliance that needs maintenance and care while using. Most gas grills are fueled by liquified petroleum gas or propane. Unburned gas accidentally released or leaking from a gas grill can cause a dangerous fire or explosion. Problems that lead to fires or explosions commonly occur at two times: during the first use of a grill after a long period of storage and when a new cylinder of propane gas is attached to the grill.

Here are some of the safety measures that you observe use while using your grill:

1. Inspect grills closely prior to the first summertime use. Check the metal tubes that lead directly to the burner. During storage, insects can block these tubes. They can be cleaned following the manufacturer’s instructions, typically by using a pipe cleaner or wire to remove any blockage. Check hoses for cracks or holes and replace any hose that appears to be damaged. Remove any sharp bends that you may find in the hose.
