If you have more than one child, then chances are there are lots of fight episodes between siblings that involves property ownership like toys, chairs, tables and even beds. This particular episode in children’s lives prompted the idea of personalized furniture for children.
Personalized furnitures will give a child a feeling of ownership and responsibility for the property. Personalizing furniture is also a way to bring back to life an old piece like cast-offs or at yard sales.

A personalized furniture does not only mean having your child’s name on the back of a chair. There are many ways you can personalize furnishings and the following are some of the ways how. These activities can be done with your child and will also serve as your bonding time.

• If it is an old piece, start by sanding down the rough spots and then give it a fresh coat of paint. When the paint is dry, get a stencil kit and stencil in your child’s name. It can be in big, bold letters or small letters but is repeated along the rim of the furniture. You can add in flowers, birds, cars or animal designs.  Novelty drawer handles and knobs can also be added. You can have your child assist you in doing this and he can choose the design himself so that he will feel that the piece is really his property once it is done.
• Another way of personalizing furniture is by decorating it with pictures of your child. He can help you in deciding which pictures will be used. next, spray both sides of the chosen pictures with a fixative so that it will not be destroyed (blotted, get wet or written on). When it is dry, lay in face down on waxed paper and brush the back with acrylic varnish. Position the picture on the furniture, smoothing out the surface to remove bubbles. Once it is dry, apply another coat of acrylic varnish and let dry again. Finally, brush it with two coats of polyurethane.
• Pictures can also be added to pillows, comforters and upholstered pieces by using photo transfer solutions that will allow you to transfer pictures into fabrics.
• Last option when in doubt is to have it done professionally. It may cost a little bit but you can be sure of the outcome.
