Taking Care of Your Carpets

Almost every home nowadays have at least one carpet or rug as these things are popular for floor covering and it adds life to a room. But are you aware that your favorite carpet is a perfect home to a hodge podge company of bacteria, germs and allergens? Worry no more because here are some tried and tested tips on how to clean your carpets and rugs.

There are many types of carpets and that each type has a specific way of cleaning technique. Each type of carpeting material will have specific care requirements as well as cleaning solutions, which will work best. For instance, wool should not be cleaned in the presence of heat and is especially susceptible to the damaging power of bleach. Refer to the label of your carpet to check for its caring instructions.

In addition to the many materials that carpets are made of, there are also many different cleaning materials available. The need to be both gentle and thorough is what often causes the most difficulty when it comes to properly cleaning carpet. Take note that one cleaning material is best for a certain type of carpet but it will be a disaster to use it on another type, so again check your carpet’s cleaning instructions.

Hot water extraction is often a good choice for carpet cleaning of non-wool fibers. Often called steam carpet cleaning, the heat purges dust and dirt from deep in the pile, aiming to remove anything that has been forced down. The solution used is designed to then easily break down and remove it all along with the suction of the deep vacuum in the machine. The shortest amount of time the carpet is wet, the better for the longevity of it since wetness causes rotting and breaks down carpeting over time. Do not subject your wool carpet to this type of cleaning as heat will destroy it.

If the wet method does not suit you, then you can try dry cleaning it. This method engages the use of chemicals. After the foam dries or once the powder has set, a powerful vacuum is used in order to remove the particles of dirt and detergent at the same time.

Whatever type of cleaning you prefer, always make sure that it is compatible with your carpet’s type in order to ensure that your carpet will last longer.
