Here is the tips and guide on how to take care of your microwave oven to last long.

1. Read the instruction manual carefully before operating the microwave for the first time.

2. Avoid unnecessary spills and splatters by covering dishes. Place a plate under food that is cooked directly on the oven floor like baked potatoes.

3. Wipe up spills at once. Clean regularly with mild detergent and water then rinse and wipe dry with paper towel or cloth. Give attention to the edge around the door and door opening in order to prevent soil buildup which will prevent the door from closing properly. To loosen spills that have dried up, boil for 3 minutes a bowl of water mixed with lemon juice. This will loosen the spills and remove any odor. Never use abrasive pads and detergents.

4. Don’t use the microwave for heating baby bottles, canning or deep- frying. These applications does not allow adequate temperature control for safe results.

5. Stay near the oven when microwaving popcorn. Heat may build up and can cause fire. Take note of the heating time but lean towards the shorter time as some ovens can scorch popcorn in two minutes.

6. Don’t dry or disinfect clothing or ather articles in the  microwave because of the risk of fire.

7. Use only microwave-safe utensils. Be sure to check the utensils before you use it.

8. Don’t use the microwave oven if the door does not close properly or firmly.

9. Never operate an empty oven as this could damage the magnetron tube.

10. Frequently check for signs of rusting inside the oven and have it repaired immediately.

11. Make sure that children operate the microwave only if supervised.

12. There previously was concern that electromagnetic emissions from microwave ovens could interfere with heart pacemakers. Modern pacemakers are shielded against such interference, but some older models may still be adversely affected by proximity to a microwave oven. If in doubt, check with your doctor.

13. An area of a food where there is increased moisture will heat more quickly than other areas. To promote uniform cooking, recipes for microwave ovens usually include directions such as turn the food midway through cooking, cover and let stand after cooking.

14. Some oven models have a protector on the magnetron tube to allow use of a small amount of metal, such as meat skewers or strips of foil over chicken wings and legs. The instructions that come with each microwave oven tell what kinds of containers to use and how to test for suitability for use.
