The World of Rugs
Rugs creates wonders, enhance and enliven a room just by “lying around”. It enhances the furnitures that is placed on it. But before you rush to the nearest furniture store, you must take note of some crucial points about rugs like its sizing, care and maintenance and measurements.
Measurements
- Measure the area where you intend to place the rug. The rug will definitely look different when hanging on display and placed on the floor.
- Placement of the rugs will also be affected by the location of doors and vents.
- To create a small intimate area with your rug, just subtract 24″ from the entire size of the furnished area.
- Space under the chair should also have rug when it is pulled away from the table. To do this, just add 54″ to the measurement on each side.
- Just to be sure, double check your measurements. Simply looking at the area won’t give an exact measurement.
- Always leave an equal amount of exposed flooring on all sides of the rug.
Sizes
- Small: Great for doorways, hearths, corners and small conversation area. Usually 1′11″ x 3′4” to 4′ x 6′
- Medium: This size is good for small bedrooms, home office or under coffee tables. Usually 5′ x 7′ to 6′ x 9′
- Large: This size is good for furniture grouping and large gathering areas like the dining room. Usually 8′ x 10′ or larger
Note: Rug sizes may vary between manufacturers. It’s safest to allow 2-6″ of leeway between a rug’s stated size and its actual size.
Care and Maintenance
- A rug pad placed between the floor and the rug will do wonders for both the rug and the floor. Its benefits are preventing slippage, minimize scratches on the floor and allow air to flow between the rug and the floor.
- Use protective pads under the furniture’s leg. If pile has been compacted, it can be revived by spritzing the area with water and brushing with a soft brush.
- Vacuum your rugs regularly with especial attention to heavy traffic areas.
- Sweeping your rug regularly will bring out the rug’s sheen, aside from getting the dust out from it.
- Be extra careful when vacuuming rug with fringes because it can get stuck to the vacuum.
- Avoid direct sunlight as it will cause the rug’s color and sheen to fade.
- Attend to spills as soon as possible. Blot with a clean cloth and work from the outside to the inside to prevent spills from spreading.
- Use a mild, non-bleach detergent, diluted with a small amount of water. You might want to contact a professional for more serious spills.
