Types of Carpet Piles

Carpet covers your floor for protection as well as for beautifying the room. You want your carpet to last long, look good and comfortable to walk on. Before you make the final decision on what carpeting to buy, you should into consideration the different types of carpet piles in order to choose to the perfect carpet for your needs.

There are four major carpet pile category:

Cut Pile
This category includes Saxony, Texture, Velvet/Plush and Frieze carpets. Cut pile carpet is the most popular of all the carpeting. A cut pile carpet is produced by cutting all the looped fibers at the top of the bundles. This creates a carpet with yarn bundles that stand straight. To create a luxurious appearance the cut pile is pre-sheared several times. This type of carpet offers the least resistant to crushing.

Cut and Loop Pile
This category includes Berber carpets. Both cut and looped fibers are combined in order to produce this type of carpeting. It has a medium density, provides a variety of textures and sculptured effects and comes in solid and colored patterns. Cut and loop carpet hides dirt, stains and footprints remarkably well due to its uneven levels of yarn.

Level Loop Pile
This type of carpeting is best for high traffic areas, durable and resists marks. Level loop pile are made by weaving even loops of yarn through both ends of the carpet’s backing. By using higher loops the carpet has a much more luxurious appearance. Level Loop carpets that utilizes short and densely packed loops is easy to clean as they prevent dirt from filtering into carpet.

Multi-Level Loop Pile
In multi-level loop pile carpets, the height of the yarns varies creating a random texture making it a good choice for high traffic areas. The main disadvantage of this type of carpeting is that the small loops have a tendency to hold more dirt and dust.
