What are Duvet and Duvet Covers?
A duvet is the same thing as a down comforter and in its simplest form, it is a cloth bag filled with down and feathers. Nowadays, silk, wool and artificial materials like polyester batting is used as filling. Duvets are used in place of a bedspread and top sheet thereby reducing the complexity of bed making.
Duvet Covers are used to decorate and protect down filled comforters or duvets. They work like giant pillow cases. The covers can be washed easily and so protect your cozy down comforter, which would be much harder or impossible to launder.
Europeans use duvet covers instead of top flat sheets so they prefer a higher thread count for a softer duvet. Higher thread count duvet covers also help keep any down that might escape the comforter. Duvet covers have buttons, zippers or ties in order to secure it. Duvet covers can be changed, with some making it reversible. It may also be a part of a bedding set with matching sheets, pillowcases and bedskirt. It can be made with materials like cotton, rayon, silk blends, microfiber, suede and others.
The down side of duvet covers is that it is very tricky to get it to cover the duvet, especially the king- sized ones. The easiest way is to spread the duvet flat on the bed, with the cover turned inside out and the bottom seam facing the bottom of the duvet. The person making the bed then puts her arms inside the cover, grasps the bottom corners of the cover and the bottom corners of the duvet and raises the duvet off the bed, allowing the cover to fall around the duvet. The person can then shake the cover in place over the duvet and secure it at the top.
